American TV

James Lipton’s show, Inside the Actors Studio, is an open book or biography for film/TV lovers who seek to know more about their beloved stars from first hand.

For quite some time, I have been a devoted follower of this TV show, hosted by one of the best universities in the US: Pace University. These symposiums are part of the graduate programs. Film students (prospective actors, writers, directors, etc.) have the chance to attend these symposiums and ask, face to face, their idols any given question regarding the matter.

It’s a questionnaire, in which actors, directors, etc.  are asked about how their private life made a deep impact on their paths as professionals. It shows how some turning points in their personal experiences pushed them to pursue acting/directing careers.

James Lipton beautifully conducts the interviews with such elegance (even though most probably, the interviews are already closed before they are shoot) that even the less impressive actor, can look like a down to earth person.

America knows how to do things in the right way, even the most insignificant ones. They are the sharpest marketing sellers, so when it comes to show the greatness of the American society, its structure and how professionals are drown to their paths, they give it all.

What I like about this program can be summarized into 3 points:

  1. It’s well written and driven. James Lipton engages in a very appropriate way his approaching to his guests, taking the interview to personal face to face conversations, with confidence, with understanding.
  2. Demystifying that Hollywood bubble, and bringing back to earth that next door neighbour reality of the person seating in the interviewee chair. Reminding all of us, that people like Martin Scorsese, Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Cameron Diaz, Charlize Theron, etc. are people like us, even coming from deconstructed backgrounds, like any other random family, or in the other way around, they grew up in a normal family.
  3. It provides another perspective of the movie business. Guests give the audience details that are very unlikely to be known outside that context.

By reading this post, it is obvious that I am into film industry, sometimes wondering that “if I would work in the movie business”.

This program has been running all the way since 1994. With 18th seasons on its back, James Lipton has given to us remarkable interviews like the following ones:

Martin Scorsese

Cate Blanchett

Tom Hanks.

George Clooney (This one’s for you, Piruetas)

Robin Williams

Hope you enjoy watching them as much as I do.

Thanks for reading this post.
