Politics: Love/hate?

Don’t get me wrong if I stop and take back again politics as a common theme in most of my posts. Indeed, it does surround us in every aspect of our lives. From the day we born till the day we might die, Politicis is the issue that never leaves us alone.

First of all, let me give some definitions on the issue concerning this present post.

Politics (taking a look at Cambridge Dictionary) means  «the activities of the government, members of law-making organizations or people who try to influence the way a country is governed».

Policy (taking a look at Cambridge Dictionary) means  «a set of ideas or a plan of what to do in particular situations that has been agreed officially by a group of people, a business organization, a government or a political party«.

I have been talking in previous posts  ( Creación de empleoCJCMCJCM 2: Estudio de ImagenIncertidumbre SocialIncertidumbre Social, 2Manifesto 15MPoder a la Italiana) about the rights of citizens; the obligations of our current governing, the laws-directives, decrees, etc.- that create the basis to build a stronger, more consistent and more stable state structure for a better governorship; the roadmap we stablish to secure the stability of our economical system; etc.

My personal goal within this post is to give the general overview gathering the impressions that politics and political actors cause on few young people. I happen to have done a poll, asking young people I know to freely express their opinion by answering some questionnaire.

Focusing on core issues, I will highlight those aspects that mostly worries the people that answered the questionnaire. Here I go.

  • They were mostly 19 years old the first time they voted. They do not support the idea of lowering the minimum age for voting.
  • They have been voting in every single elections called. Not necessarly giving the vote to the same political party but commonly trusting in left-wing parties.
  • Only one respondent declined to vote and antoher one deposited a blank ballot.
  • They feel their vote goes wasted. They claim for a real alternative growing strong.
  • Most of them are not affiliated to any group. At the same time they ask for open lists of candidates.
  • They do not support the fact that hinge parties are mostly from nationalist ideology.
  • Most valued politician: Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba from left-side, Esperanza Aguirre from right-side, Rosa Díez as the growing alternative.
  • Less valued politician: Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero from left-side, PP from left-side.
  • They do not consider political young platforms are useful at all.
  • They think there is rigidity in the internal structure and half of them believe that internal vote loyalty is negative in political parties.
  • They believe academic education has to be considered as one requirement for leaders in election lists. So to speak, combining the political profile with other professional careers is seen by respondents as a negative issue.
  • They do not consider that a separation of the 3 branches/power exists at all, exercising influence over each other (legislative, executive and judicial).
  • Currently half of the respondents are following TV political gatherings, another half believe the 4th power (public opinion) is being influenced by the media corporations and happen to filter the topics discussed.
  • Even though they are interested in politics, they would not consider becoming professionally devoted to it. Some young known public figures: Albert Rivera, Bibiana Aido, Daniel Mendez and CiU.
  • National/Municipal/Regional elections should be done at the same time.
  • They disagree with the descentralization of the Central power, however they agree with autonomical parties.
  • Decision making process leaves aside their needs, being those decisions, mostly attached to the popularity of the political party or candidate.
I feel very satisfied with the poll results since it shows the real interest of young people in politics, decision making process, etc. They vote, they express their opinions. In the oposite side of the line there is still lack of involvement of young potentials inside the political parties structure. It is claimed an alternative to the current PP/PSOE.
In the following post I will pay particular attention to two aspects my respondants have highlighted. Since the issue itself is really interesting I consider apropiate dedicating a whole new post to it (issues they consider relevant+concrete actions that they would put into practise).
I thank all of the people that took part in this questionnaire.
